An open door says, “Come in.”
A shut door says, “Who are you?”
Shadows and ghosts go through shut doors.
If a door is shut and you want it shut,
why open it?
If a door is open and you want it open,
why shut it?
Doors forget but only doors know what it is
doors forget.
…“Doors” is found in The Sandburg Range, the first representative selection from Sandburg’s entire body of work (poetry and prose) available at Amazon.com.

In some schools of poetics, the author cuts a line on a particular word or words to emphasize, underscore, or flag a theme. It appears Sandburg was practicing that craft, hence:
“Come in.”
“Who are you?”
Shut doors.
Why open it?
Why shut it?
doors forget
