Mark Erickson was born in Hollywood, California, and lives along the West Coast of United States, near the surf breaks and the sand dunes. After growing up in Hollywood, his family moved to Germany and Italy. He later settled in the Bay Area to study painting and art history at the San Francisco Art Institute and the San Francisco Art Academy. Mark paints in his studio in California and exhibits in galleries around the United States. He continues writing poetry and short stories that often are inspiration for his paintings. He has self-published numerous books on painting, photography, and poetry in collaboration with Katy Zartl of Katworks Graphics in Vienna, Austria. He is presently working on a photo book, The Man From Painted Woods, of his father’s exploits in World War II. You can view Mark’s work at

Birgit (Katy) Zartl: Born in Vienna, Austria, Katy Zartl studied psychology at the University of Vienna and worked in the Neurological Department of the Hospital Lainz (Vienna). She received additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and art therapy, which included courses in painting/drawing techniques as well as in the study of chromatics. Since 2000, she has worked as a self-employed psychotherapist, photographer, and painter. Visit her at
