Waiting To Be Heard
by Joyce Gullickson

I am waiting
for a rebirth of compassion
and I am listening
for a revival of reason.
I am waiting for the Age of Greed to recede
for Doctors Without Borders
to discover a cure for apathy
and I am listening for all billionaires
to address the plight of the homeless–
because there is No Planet B
and we are all billionaires…
I am waiting for those who suffer
to be overwhelmed by a surplus of love.

I am listening for the next Arctic calving
to cause a rise in awareness
before Indonesia drowns
and Florida is engulfed.
I am waiting for the rebirth of Einstein
for an awakening of scientific discovery,
for women of courage
to give birth to a freedom of change.
I am waiting for critical thinking and new ideas
and I am listening for the rebirth
of family, for the adoption of orphans
by a ministry of widows
I am waiting for the bird of paradise
to perpetually bloom in the desert
and I am endlessly waiting
for mankind to realize
all men are created equal.
I am waiting for the green fields
of youth to yield a leader
worthy of following
into the valley of peace
and I am listening for a rebirth of compassion
I am waiting for the melting pot of reason
to boil over into the streets of America.
and I am listening for the voice of the people
who patiently protest injustice, to be heard
in the Supreme Court of Heaven…
I am waiting
for a rebirth of conscience
and a revival of compassion
and I am listening
for my voice to be heard.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: “Waiting To Be Heard” is an answer poem to Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s “I am Waiting.” It addresses my concerns for our future as a country, and my belief that we hold the answer to the problems we have created.
