Bar Bukowski in Amsterdam, The Netherlands — named for American author Charles Bukowski— is hostling monthly literary evenings featuring published and unpublished authors reading their work. The next scheduled literary event, on Monday, January 20, 2014, will feature poets Aaron Mick, Pim Oudheusden, Sabina Lukovic, Max Urai, Jibbe Willems, and — in her poetry performance debut — Hannah Woods. Special guests will include Eddie Woods (contributing editor to the Silver Birch Press Bukowski Anthology), reading from his newly released Tennessee Williams in Bangkok, and bart plantenga, whose work appears in the Bukowski Anthology.

Bar Bukowski has been called “the hottest place in the eastern part of Amsterdam for breakfast, lunch, and drinks.” The decor features Bukowski-inspired touches — including a typewriter light fixture — and includes Buk’s quotes on the menu. The next scheduled literary event — which will take place on Monday, November 25th — will feature an established author and a half dozen up-and-coming writers, with a jazz trio from the Conservatory of Amsterdam playing American jazz standards.

Our friends at LAVA (Los Angeles Visionary Association) have asked us to help spread the word about an event scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013LAVA Literary Salon: A Dashiell Hammett Evening. This sounds like an amazing event — and if you make at least part of your living as a writer, it’s probably tax deductible (research!) — a special evening to celebrate the life and work of Dashiell Hammett, the author who started the hardboiled detective genre.

Here’s what you can expect…

Julie M. Rivett (Hammett’s granddaughter and editor of several books about him) wlll discuss the author’s professional life, private life, public life, and literary legacy.

Richard Layman, a Hammett biographer, will trace the author’s remarkable journey from high school dropout to world renowned writer.

Q&A with Rivett and Layman.

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will present scenes starring legendary Hammett characters, including Nick and Nora Charles.

Buffet Dinner that features gourmet fare popular in exclusive restaurants circa 1950.
