journey Summer is here and people are hitting the road to enjoy some rest and relaxation — and maybe even some cultural enrichment. What’s your idea of a perfect vacation? If you’ve experienced one — tell us about it in a poem or flash fiction (200 words or fewer). Or if you’re still waiting for your dream sojourn, let us know what you envision — in a poem or flash fiction.

PROMPT: In a poem or flash fiction (200 words or fewer), tell us about your perfect vacation — real or imagined.  Please send a photo of yourself — at any age — to accompany the poem, and provide a caption for the photo (when, where). (If possible, send a vacation photo.)

WHAT: Submissions can be original or previously published poems or flash fiction. You retain all rights to your work and give Silver Birch Press permission to publish on social media and in a potential print edition.

WHEN: We’ll feature the poems/flash fiction and photos during the Silver Birch Press MY PERFECT VACATION Poetry/Flash Fiction Series from July 15th through August 31, 2015.

HOW TO SUBMIT: Email one poem or flash fiction to SBPSUBMISSIONS@gmail.com as an MSWord attachment — and in the same file include your name, contact info (including email address), one-paragraph author’s bio (written in third person), and any notes about your creative process or thoughts about your poem. Please put all this information in one MSWord document and title the file with your last name (and only your last name). Write”Vacation” in subject line of email. Please send a photo of yourself (vacation photo, if available)— at any age — to accompany the poem, and provide a caption for the photo (when, where).

SUBMISSION CHECKLIST
To help everyone understand our submission requirements, we’ve prepared the following checklist.

1. Send ONE MS Word document TITLED WITH YOUR LAST NAME (e.g. Smith.doc or Jones.docx).

2. In the same MS Word document, include your contact information (name, mailing address, email address).

3. In the same MS Word document, include an author’s bio, written in the third person (e.g., Bill Smith has been writing since age seven…”).

4. In the same MS Word document, include a note about your poem or creative process (this is optional).

5. In the same MS Word document, include a caption for your photo (including where, when and/or date taken).

6. Send a photo of yourself at any age as a SEPARATE jpg attachment (not in the MS Word document). Title the photo with your last name (e.g., Jones.jpg). (We’d prefer vacation photos.)

7. Email to SBPSUBMISSIONS@gmail.com — and put VACATION in the subject line. (NOTE: This is a new email address for this series.)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, July 31, 2015

NOTIFICATION: If your poem or flash fiction is selected for the series, you will be notified by August 15, 2015.

Thank you! Happy travels (real or imagined)!

During July, many countries — including the U.S., Canada, and France — celebrate national holidays. At Silver Birch Press, we are initiating our own annual holiday — July 2nd, Half New Year’s Day. July 2 is the midpoint of a common year because there are 182 days before and 182 days after it. The exact time of the middle of the year is at noon on July 2nd.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: To celebrate Half New Year — and the 182 remaining days in the year — Silver Birch Press is issuing a call for submissions. We are looking for original poetry based on the theme that Half New Year evokes (half, middle, and/or new) or erasure poems based on page 72 (for July 2nd, 7/2) of a book of your choice. The erasure poem should reflect the theme (half, middle, and/or new) in some way. We will feature the poems on the Silver Birch Press blog from July 2-31, 2014.

HOW TO SUBMIT: Please send entries as MSWord attachments to silver@silverbirchpress.com along with your name, mailing address, email address, one-paragraph bio, and any notes about your creative process (send all of this in one MSWord document). For erasure poems, send typed version of poem and a jpg scan of the original erasure.

DEADLINE: June 30, 2014

FINAL DAY FOR SUBMISSIONS — NO EXENSIONS!

WHAT: Silver Birch Press is seeking submissions of erasure poems (find out more about this art form at wavepoetry.com and geist.com) that use Charles Bukowski’s writing as source material. For examples of erasure poetry, see this link.

WHY: Bukowski fans love Buk and his oeuvre — and erasure poetry allows people to feel closer to the great writer and his superb writing. Bukowski erasure poems are composed with the utmost respect for the master — and as a way to honor his brilliance, which shines brighter every year.

WHERE: Selected Bukowski Erasure poems will appear on the Bukowski On Wry blog and in a printed collection.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

1. Select a page from the work of Charles Bukowski (poetry or prose). (NOTE: Single pages only — no spreads.)

2. Photocopy the page, then mark out, white out, or in some other way (see examples), eliminate some of the words. The remaining words constitute your Bukowski Erasure Poem. (Note: Make sure all the eliminated words are blocked out.)

3. Scan (or take a photo of) your marked-up copy.

4. Create a separate typed version in MSWord or in body of email.

5. Send an email to bukowskionwry@yahoo.com that includes:

  • Erasure poems (up to three) in PDF or JPG format
  • Typed versions of erasure poems in MSWord or in body of email
  • Your one-paragraph bio
  • Your name, email address, and mailing address
  • Title, edition, page number, publisher, and publication date for the book (if it’s a poem from a book, list the name of the poem and the book). If the Bukowski material comes from an internet resource, list the source. If the material comes from a Bukowski novel, list the chapter number.

DEADLINE: December 15, 2013

PAYMENT: All contributors featured in the print edition will receive a copy of the book, which we intend to release in March 2014 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Buk’s passing.

We planned to include a chapter dedicated to Charles Bukowski in the Silver Birch Press SUMMER ANTHOLOGY — in honor of Bukowski’s August birthday — but we are receiving a wide range of contributions that have made us rethink our original idea and branch out into a full-length BUKOWSKI ANTHOLOGY. To date, our anthologies have been “invitation only” — the editors invite participants or receive nominations from colleagues — but we’re opening up submissions for the BUKOWSKI ANTHOLOGY.

So if you’ve written any poetry or prose ABOUT Bukowski (not just written in his “style”), we’d love to read it. To submit, please send an email through the “contact us” form on our website, silverbirchpress.com and we will send you the guidelines — which are basically three poems and/or a story or essay of up to 2,000 words. Deadline is June 1st, with an August 1st release date.

This is an experiment (asking for submissions) — and while we can’t promise publication, we promise to respond to everyone.
